Prerequisites

To use Octagon VC Agents, you will need two API keys:

  • An Octagon API key (for access to Octagon Private Markets data)
  • An OpenAI API key (for AI-powered analysis)

Get Your Octagon API Key

To use VC Agents, you need to:

  1. Sign up for a free account at Octagon
  2. After logging in, from left menu, navigate to API Keys
  3. Generate a new API key
  4. Use this API key in your configuration as the OCTAGON_API_KEY value

Get Your OpenAI API Key

You also need an OpenAI API key to enable AI-powered features:

  1. Sign up or log in at OpenAI
  2. Go to API Keys
  3. Create a new API key
  4. Use this API key in your configuration as the OPENAI_API_KEY value

Install pipx

To use Octagon VC Agents, you need pipx, a tool for installing and running Python applications in isolated environments.

On macOS

Install pipx using Homebrew (recommended):

brew install pipx
pipx ensurepath

Or with pip:

python3 -m pip install --user pipx
python3 -m pipx ensurepath

On Windows

Install pipx using pip:

python -m pip install --user pipx
python -m pipx ensurepath

After installation, restart your terminal so that the pipx command is available.

Installation

Running on Claude Desktop

To configure Octagon VC Agents for Claude Desktop:

  1. Open Claude Desktop
  2. Go to Settings > Developer > Edit Config
  3. Add the following to your claude_desktop_config.json (Replace YOUR_OCTAGON_API_KEY_HERE with your Octagon API key and YOUR_OPENAI_API_KEY_HERE with your OpenAI API key):

To configure Octagon VC Agents in Cursor:

  1. Open Cursor Settings
  2. Go to Features > MCP Servers
  3. Click "+ Add New MCP Server"
  4. Enter the following:
    • Name: "octagon-mcp" (or your preferred name)
    • Type: "command"
    • Command: env OCTAGON_API_KEY=YOUR_OCTAGON_API_KEY_HERE OPENAI_API_KEY=YOUR_OPENAI_API_KEY_HERE pipx run --pip-args="--no-cache-dir" octagon-vc-agents run

The Composer Agent will automatically use VC Agents when appropriate, but you can explicitly request it by describing your investment research needs.
